This
story was a bit longer than some of the others and sadly, it really
felt like a model advertisement. From the “motorcycle” thingies
to the “mechs” of the Imperium forces all the way down to the
death guards (Space marines infected by Nurgle, one of the chaos
gods), it felt like I was reading the descriptions from a toy catalog
for Warhammer 40K.
The story is basic. Some commander is told to do something that gets her and most of her people killed and one survives and gets promoted and then because everyone else died, that promoted officer is now put with a completely new unit, thus perpetuating the cycle of aloneness and solitude that all leaders of the Astra Militarum must bear. In one sentence then: A bunch of people die and nothing changes.
Stories like this are why I am thinking of reading the novels again in 2027. I need a bit more depth and characterization. Which is ironic given how franchise’y fiction’y the books are, ie, shallow.
