I skipped to the final volume to see how things ended and to see if it was really worth my time wading through an extra 16 volumes. My verdict is a resounding no.

While there was a lot of unexplained stuff, I was still able to grasp the broader details. There was a super-homonculi who was trying to become a god and Edward pretty much punches him to death. Yeah, the power of brotherly love, blah, blah, blah. Then everyone gets a relatively happy ending and Al gets his body back because Ed exchanges his ability to perform alchemy for it.

I didn’t care. I didn’t care how everything had gotten to the point where it was. I know the ending now. If I want to see all the inbetween parts, I might try the anime. But given how I am reacting to returning to manga (ie, realizing I am pretty much done with it, period), I don’t know if I want to try anime again either.

I read this the same day that I read the Groo comic. I thoroughly enjoyed Groo and did not enjoy this. Just like I didn’t enjoy the One Piece volume I read earlier this month. I just have to face the fact that my time with manga is done. I hate coming to realizations like that. It means I’ve changed and while change is a good thing, I still don’t like it.

Oh yeah!!!! THIS is how the series should have been going all along. Non-stop action with talk’y bits to explain stuff, but it is all on topic! Every single thing advanced the story line and I wasn’t having my chained yanked with stupid kids running around an abandoned city playing pranks or other such crap. Lust appears to be killed. For real. Now, whether she stays dead or whatever I have no idea, but Roy Mustang destroyed the philosophers stone that was her heart, so I hope she’s dead for good.

We found out for sure that the creator of the homunculi is Big Daddy Elric. He unplugs himself from a massive machine and goes to his house where Edward meets him at the end of the volume. More mentions are made of the “human sacrifice” needed and Edward comes across a country that was destroyed in one day. He finds a wall carving that looks very similar to alchemical circles but slightly different. My guess is that the leaders of the country opened the Big Scary Door and it destroyed their country. We’ll see.

Now, the humor wasn’t lacking in this issue. It was just saved for the “extras” at the end, where it belongs! I laughed my head off.

You know, I’ve figured out just why I am having such a hard time with this manga. The manga-ka keeps sending us down little side trails, sometimes in great detail and with a sense of outrageous silliness, that don’t have anything to do with the main plot. It simply infuriates me. It’s not a constant thing, but it happens enough to interrupt my enjoyment of the main storyline.

I think the anime creators did a fantastic job of that and that is why I enjoyed the anime so much. Even though they didn’t have the ending at that time, they still told a fantastic story with very few offshoots. I just wish this particular manga would cut the fat.

I am seriously thinking of reading more volumes in a row so I don’t have to deal with interruptions as much. But just pack them all into one review, so kind of how I used to do manga reviews back in the day. Not sure that is actually a good solution, but it’s that or dnf the series and I really want to see how things turn out.

We do meet the creator of the homunculi and he destroys one who has rebelled. We find out for sure that King Bradley is indeed a homunculi, but one that can age and apparently have children.

Other than that, this was just a complete slog. I mean, I was bored almost to tears and couldn’t wait for it to end. That is NOT the feeling I want when reading an action manga. Well, whatever. I just don’t care at the moment.

This was good! We finally get some serious butt kicking going on by lots of various people, so it’s not just State Alchemists ka-blooey’ing people or Scar exploding bodies. We get chimeras, successful ones, unlike the poor girl and her dog a few volumes back. It did make me question WHY the alchemist that did that to his wife and then daughter wasn’t brought onto the project for the successful chimeras. Felt like sloppy story telling.

But Al, the big suit of armor brother, getting “kidnapped” and allowing it to happen for a chance to get a body back, well, he shows a lot of brains. And then when Ed comes rampaging in to take on the homunculus, we find out a LOT more about homunculi in general and we see why Ed is a state alchemist at such a young age. He’s not only powerful but also very smart.

Then we have President Fuhrer King Bradley getting involved. Once he overhears that there’s a homunculus involved, not only does he send down Major Armstrong (the biggest and handsomest State Alchemist) with a battalion of shock troopers, but he makes an appearance himself and almost single handedly takes down chimeras and the homunculus, without batting an eye. It’s easy to see the power he has harnessed has allowed him to become the leader of the country. But it’s also revealed that he has the symbol of the ourobouros (the snake eating its own tail) on his eye and so far, only homunculi have had that symbol. So either it can be used for other purposes OR Bradley himself is a homunculus. With the order to exterminate the nation of Shamballa, and therefore its attendant priests with their unique power (as we’ve seen through it’s misuse by Scar), coming directly from Bradley, it would appear that the power of Shamballa is something that the followers of the ourobouros fear. My vote is that Bradley is a homunculus. Which means he’s ultimately evil and if that plays out, I hope he gets his.

Knowing my luck though, the manga-ka will pull an old fashioned switch-a-roo and reveal some info that changes everything at the worst possible moment. So I’m not placing my dollar just quite yet.

Ahhh yes, the art. Blah, blah blah. The symmetry was totally blah, blahh but I found the use of different pen styles blah, blah, blah. In short, blah, blah blah unless you’re really into that stuff and then I’d probably have to say blah, blah, blah, but just like with Bradley getting my vote for being an evil homunculus, don’t hold me to blah, blah, blah because it might just change to blah, blah, blah at any time. That’s the wonderful thing about art, it can totally blah, blah, blah.

When I went to FMA.fandom and saw that tiny little synopsis, I was wondering why such a popular manga didn’t have some weeb who had completely filled it up. Well, it turns out that some weeb did, only they did it for each chapter instead of the whole volume. And there was NO WAY I was going to copy/paste 10+ pages of synopsis. What’s there is good enough as far as I’m concerned.
♪And it’s good enough for me♪

This was an entire book of flashback about how Ed and Al tried to resurrect their mother, lost their bodies and ended up in the military. We also get a glimpse into the history of Roy Mustang, the man who found them and how he ended up in Central with the group currently surrounding him.

During the failed resurrection ceremony, Ed meets some entity and a weird door that appears to contain nigh unlimited knowledge. Both entity and door would seem to be malignant, at least to me as a reader but it didn’t appear that Ed took it that way at all. Of course, he’s only 11 or 12, so he’s probably taking the entity at face value.

For a flashback, this was interesting. It directly tied into the main story line and didn’t feel like the manga-ka was fluffing up the page count at all. It had relevance to the story I was interested in (ie, the MAIN story. Take note One Piece, this is how and why you do flashbacks).

I have a feeling this series is going to run at the 3star rating more times than not. At least until I get into new territory where I don’t vaguely recall stuff from the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime.

There was nothing at all bad about this volume. But there was nothing that made me laugh. Or cry. Or get excited. Or mad. Or depressed. It just kind of rolled along. I know I’ll read the whole series, because I’ve never actually known the ending (the original anime was produced before the manga was ended, so they made up their own ending) and I want to know it. But I can’t say I’m super excited when this rolls around to read.

Eh, whatever. I’ll plug along.

Man, this volume had it all. Shocking secrets. Great laughs. Tragic deaths. Romance. Family. You name it and it was probably in here. And I liked it.

With the Homunculi saving Edward but hinting that they are only doing it so they can sacrifice him later, it is made evident beyond a doubt that they are evil. While they seem to want to stir up strife and war everywhere, what their actual plan is is still a mystery. And now that we know that Envy can look like anyone and shapechange at will, well, everybody is a suspect. That really amps the tension up.

While Hughes’ death was sad, it didn’t overshadow the whole volume. The manga-ka kept things pretty light and in the bonus chapter really made me laugh my head off. I think the following picture encapsulates the humor. In a previous panel, the puppy is peeing against a wall because it’s not housebroken and this is how it’s owner responds. Hahahahahahahaa.

At the same time, I never felt that the lighthearted humor made light of the trauma that various characters experience. Alphonse goes through an existential crisis as suddenly he begins to doubt whether he was ever actually a real person. Until Winry beats him over his metallic head with a big ass wrench and tells him not to be stupid. I laughed but I also understood the doubt and pathos he was feeling. He’s a suit of armor after all.

Overall, I enjoyed this a lot more than the previous volume, for which I am very thankful.

Truth be told, I wasn’t really feeling it while reading this. Not a bad volume per se but I wasn’t spellbound, nor was I glued to the pages. I actually watched Shrek in the background while perusing this and ended up enjoying that more. I don’t know what it is, but this just doesn’t keep my interest that much. I hope future volumes work better for me.

Even with the Shou Tucker (the Stitching Alchemist) arc, I still really enjoyed this volume. Unfortunately, Shou murdering his wife and then 2 years later his little daughter to create talking chimeras was just brutal. I still remember this from the anime and it had a lot more heart and punch than was presented here in the manga.

There is a lot of info revealed yet again. Another entity, Envy, is revealed and we’re also treated to the debut of Scar, an alchemist who is one of the last surviving Shambalans. Shambala was a country that defied the Government and said government used State Alchemists to wipe it off the map in retaliation. Lust, one of the entities, reveals that the Entities have some sort of master plan that the Elric brothers figure into but we’re not given much info beyond that.

Lots of existential angst and wondering if the rules are good and fights. Oh, the fights are grand. Scar has the power of destruction and explodes people and things and is also apparently superhumanly fast. Ed gets his arm destroyed and Al gets massive holes blown in him. The volume ends with them going back to their home village to be repaired by the mechanic who created Ed’s automail arm and leg in the first place.

My only quibble here was how everyone didn’t shoot first and ask questions later when it came to Scar. He has already killed over 15 state alchemists but nobody shoots him. They try to go mano a mano with predictable results. There’s a reason we have armies of soldiers now and not one of warriors.

I read the first volume of this back in 2007 but had just watched the original anime and it was so similar that I didn’t want to go over the same territory again. Of course, 15 years later the anime is a vague memory and I’d rather read the manga now than watch either the original or Brotherhood.

Ok, basic premise is a world with Alchemists who have “powers” and it’s all based on the laws of alchemy and equivalent exchange. We follow the adventures of the Elric brothers. Edward, who is the elder and the State Certified alchemist is known as the fullmetal alchemist because one of his legs and one of his arms is made up entirely of metal. His younger brother is Alphonse and he is nothing but a big empty suit of animated armor. Their condition came about when they tried to resurrect their dead mother and in the process almost died. They brought something back, but it wasn’t their mother and it doesn’t seem like it came back alive. So their goal now is to restore their bodies back to the way they were.

Within this world, some unnamed country has a very strong army and most of that strength is based on it’s cadre of Alchemists and their varying abilities. They seem to be in the middle of either building an Empire or consolidating one. But either way, nobody likes the Alchemists and the slang nickname for them is Dogs of the Army.

This volume had several standalone adventures about Ed & Al and introduces us to the idea of the Philosopher’s Stone. Said stone is able to bypass the natural laws and the Elrics hope to find it to restore their bodies. They find one, only it turns out to be fake and the guy who used it is being used by some inhuman appearing alchemists who go by the name Lust and Gluttony.

This was a very mixed volume of humor and super serious. It was odd but at the same time it worked for me. I think the following pix showcases that dichotomy rather well.

Ed has just knocked out a terrorist on a train and the two train drivers use the distraction to beat the everliving daylights out of the other terrorist with shovels. They they all give each other the thumbs up and the air is filled with “we are so awesome” symbols (the little stars). It’s ridiculous. But it is funny too.

I know some of my familiarity and non-confusion is because I watched the anime. I don’t know how the world building and character development would appear to someone reading this with no knowledge. I tried to view things through a lens of ignorance, and while I felt I did a pretty good job of that, some things were just impossible to not remember.

Overall, I had a much better impression this time around than I did in ‘07 and that gives me hope the rest of the series will turn out well too. I’m looking forward to diving into more of this as the months roll on.
